Oxygen Sensors are a vital and now
mandatory component required on all automobiles since 1984. Due to strict
air pollution requirements by various governments, the oxygen sensor has
become a global billion-dollar business.
Oxygen
Sensors are required today due to the increasingly tough exhaust
emission and they go in tandem with the catalytic converters. One Oxygen
Sensor is used in the exhaust branch right before the catalytic converter.
A second oxygen sensor is sometimes placed in the exhaust system after the
catalytic converter of a spark-ignition engine. This is to permit optimum
performance of the three-way catalytic converters. Currently the average
oxygen sensor content per vehicle worldwide is 1.67. This is predicted to
increase an average of 10% a year as the market size increases
exponentially.
Due to the extreme technology involved in the manufacturing of this
product, the competition worldwide has been limited to a few selected
suppliers. Within the technology there are also varying levels which are
attained by companies, hence also limiting their distribution.
Oxygen
Sensors have varying levels of sophistication . This depends on the
year and make of the vehicle; with the oldest vehicles and technology using
only one connecting wire, while the most current applications uses 4 to 5
wires.
